Emily Moore Cosci, beloved wife of Joshua Cosci and daughter of Mary Rynerson of Sisters and David Rynerson of South Amboy, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, April 16. She was 36.
Emily was born in Eugene, Oregon, graduated from the honors program at South Eugene High School, and received bachelor's and master's degrees from Oregon State University. She was an adjunct faculty member at OSU for 10 years and most recently worked for Wolftree, an educational organization based in Sisters and Portland.
Emily was passionate about educating others, especially the less fortunate, in science, environment and life skills. She will be remembered by all who knew her and whose lives she touched for her radiant personality and unfailing optimism.
Emily is survived by her husband, Joshua Cosci, and daughter, Lily Elizabeth Cosci, age three, of Sisters, and a large and loving circle of relatives and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at Sisters Community Church, Saturday, April 24 at 2 p.m.
Emily was a long-time member of EEAO, Oregon's professional association for environmental educators. Her membership and activities have supported EEAO's work in providing training and networking opportunities for classroom teachers, formal and non-formal environmental educators and community members who are engaged in educating others about the environment and natural resources. Through EEAO's work, Oregon has forged a strong place in the national EE arena leading efforts in advocacy for the profession, for the "No Oregon Child Left Inside" campaign and in promoting excellence in EE preparation, programming and evaluation. Emily was instrumental in serving as a judge for last year's Oregon EE Awards and in bringing in financial support for EEAO through a very successful auction at the 2009 North American Association of Environmental Education conference. Donations in Emily's name will help EEAO continue the important work it has been engaged in for over 30 years. A possible memorial scholarship or awards program fund for beginning environmental educators is being discussed. Donations can be made below through paypal or by calling 503-234-EEAO. Checks (include note on memo line noting "in memory of Emily Cosci") can also be sent to: EEAO, PO Box 66014, Portland, OR 97290.
