Outdoor Education Certification Project
Why a certification project?
Outdoor and environmental education can be a transformative approach to education, and it is happening across Oregon in abundance. Yet accessible training opportunities are limited for early-career environmental educators. To address this need, the Environmental Education Association of Oregon (EEAO) and the Oregon State University Extension Service Outdoor School Program (Outdoor School Program) are collaborating to fill this need.
We have established a team of collaborators to develop a low-cost, open access continuing education program culminating in an employer-recognized, non-credit certification to elevate the profession of outdoor education.
Note: We define the field of outdoor education broadly. It is also sometimes referred to as environmental education, place-based, land-based, or experiential education. This type of education can take many forms, including outdoor school programming. We intend for this certification program to support Oregon educators from across this diverse field.

Project Outcomes
-
Students who attend outdoor education programs receive high quality, student-centered, culturally relevant education.
-
Student facing staff have a better experience in outdoor education, experiencing an improved sense of self-efficacy and competency teaching in the field.
-
Education providers invest in teaching staff who demonstrate their commitment to improving their practice.
-
Incoming professionals in the field of outdoor education have the skills, knowledge, and abilities needed to advance careers in formal or informal education or a related field.
-
Educators have the knowledge and ability to advocate for systemic shifts within their organizations and the field of outdoor education.
We hope that this continuing education program will support Oregon’s students, incoming professionals and anyone who hires and contracts with outdoor educators.
Share your thoughts and expertise!
We’re seeking input from our Oregon colleagues and young people interested in the outdoor education field. Help us identify the essential competencies for success as an outdoor educator for K-12 students. Share your perspective on common skill gaps in the incoming outdoor education workforce.
